PAT WINS FIRST ARTHUR
REDWAY MEMORIAL TROPHY COMPETITION
When our much loved member,
Arthur Redway, sadly died last year, he left a legacy to the Circle, which the
committee decided to use for an annual competition for a Trophy in his
name. As Arthur wrote mainly in the gothic style it was decided that this
would be the theme of the competition.
The first winner of the trophy was Patricia Pycraft with her story ‘Love
amongst the Gargoyles’ telling the charming story of a wedding where the bride
couldn’t see her mother (or could she?). Runner-up was ‘An erotic
incident at Mandrake Hall’ by Joyce Robinson, outlining the delights and
results of spending an evening with a phantom. In third-place, a much
darker piece by Duncan Howard ‘Dead Man’s Morn’, giving the last evocative
thoughts of a prisoner condemned to be burnt at the stake.
The prizes were presented by Kathryn Redway, Arthur’s widow and the
judging was by members themselves. As the circle is now too large for all
entries to be read out on one evening, they were all displayed anonymously on
the Circle website so that members could read them before the evening at their
leisure. It also meant that members who couldn’t attend the presentation
evening could also cast their votes.
